Programs & Methodology
Learning That Reaches Every Kind of Reader
A Sound Foundation uses a rich, research-backed blend of methods to help every student master reading, spelling, comprehension, and writing — at their own pace, in their own way.
The Foundation of Every Lesson
All instruction at A Sound Foundation is built on the Barbara Wilson Reading System — a structured literacy program grounded in the science of reading. But the method is only part of the story. What makes Ms. Kay's approach truly effective is how she brings it to life: through warmth, creativity, and an unwavering commitment to meeting each student exactly where they are.
1:1 Personalized Instruction
Your Child Gets Ms. Kay's Full Attention
Every session at A Sound Foundation is a private, one-on-one lesson. There are no distractions, no comparisons, and no one-size-fits-all curriculum. Ms. Kay designs each lesson specifically for your child — based on their current skill level, their learning style, and the goals you set together.
This individualized approach means your child is never lost in a group or held back by a pace that doesn't fit them. Progress is steady, visible, and celebrated every step of the way.
- Private 1:1 sessions
- Lessons tailored to each student
- Progress tracked and celebrated
- Flexible pacing
Multi-Sensory & Kinesthetic Methods
Learning That Engages the Whole Child
Reading is not just a visual skill — it involves hearing, speaking, touching, and moving. Ms. Kay's lessons incorporate a rich variety of multi-sensory and kinesthetic activities that engage multiple pathways in the brain at once.
Students may trace letters in sand, tap out syllables, use letter tiles, or act out word meanings. These hands-on, body-engaged techniques are especially powerful for students with dyslexia or other learning differences — and they make learning genuinely enjoyable.
- Visual, auditory & tactile activities
- Kinesthetic movement integrated
- Especially effective for dyslexia
- Engaging and enjoyable
The Barbara Wilson Reading System
Science of Reading at the Core
The Barbara Wilson Reading System (BWRS) is a structured literacy program designed for students in grades 2–12 who have not learned to read and spell with traditional methods. It is based on the Orton-Gillingham approach — one of the most extensively researched and validated methods for teaching reading.
BWRS builds skills systematically and sequentially: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Students develop a deep understanding of how words work — not just memorization, but true mastery.
- Structured, sequential skill-building
- Phonics, fluency & comprehension
- Orton-Gillingham based
- Proven for struggling readers & dyslexia
Self-Esteem & Confidence Building
Reading Skills and Self-Belief Grow Together
A child who struggles to read often carries more than academic challenges — they carry doubt, frustration, and sometimes a deep fear of being seen as 'not smart.' Ms. Kay understands this deeply, and she makes building a student's confidence just as central to her work as building their reading skills.
Every lesson is designed to create small wins. Every session ends with a student feeling capable, seen, and proud. Because when a child believes in themselves, everything else becomes possible.
- Safe, encouraging environment
- Celebrates every win
- Reduces reading anxiety
- Builds lifelong self-belief
